Guardsman Blue with white stripes, a golden-hour sky and a cracked dry lake bed give the artwork presence across a room. The Cobra and the dust trail behind it invite a closer look. Above a desk or in a garage lounge, it's a conversation piece for anyone who knows what that name means.

The subject is a 1965 Cobra 427 roadster with side exhausts and roll bar, on El Mirage dry lake at golden hour. A 7.0-litre Ford big-block V8 in a light aluminium roadster: the body and chassis came from AC Cars in England, the engine went in at Shelby American in California. The 427 brought the wider arches and the coil-spring chassis.

Every car was a drawing before it was a car. We start with the finished car and draw it back to that first decision, until the proportion is honest and the stance is right and you would know it from across the room without a badge.
