Black squiggles, pink and mint triangles and a yellow sun in the Memphis Milano style give the artwork presence across a room. The red SZ, black roof and gold wheels sharp against the pattern, invites a closer look. Above a desk or in a garage lounge, it's a conversation piece for anyone who knows what that name means.

The subject is the 1991 SZ in Alfa red with a black roof and gold wheels, the ES-30 assembled by Zagato near Milan. Its 3.0-litre V6 made 210 PS on a chassis from the Alfa 75, and 1,036 were built from 1989 to 1991. With six small headlamps and a hard wedge of a nose, it was nicknamed Il Mostro, the monster.

Every car was a drawing before it was a car. We start with the finished car and draw it back to that first decision, until the proportion is honest and the stance is right and you would know it from across the room without a badge.
