A deep night sky, the Milky Way and gold 22B lettering give the artwork presence across a room. The Sonic Blue coupe on wet tarmac, with the Pleiades above it, the stars Subaru is named after, invites a closer look. Above a desk or in a garage lounge, it's a conversation piece for anyone who knows what that name means.

The subject is the 1998 Impreza 22B STi, the wide-arched two-door built for Subaru's 40th anniversary and its third World Rally Championship manufacturers' title in a row. Its 2.2-litre turbocharged flat-four was officially rated at 280 PS. The 400 cars for Japan sold out almost at once.

Every car was a drawing before it was a car. We start with the finished car and draw it back to that first decision, until the proportion is honest and the stance is right and you would know it from across the room without a badge.
