Seller's description

DESCRIPTION
Souls on the Banks of the Acheron by Adolf Hirémy-Hirschl, 1898, printed as a Greek mythology art poster on 240gsm matte paper. Sizes A5 to A1 and 12x16 to 24x36 inches, framed or unframed.

ABOUT THE PAINTING
Hirémy-Hirschl, a Hungarian painter trained in Vienna, finished this canvas in 1898. The original measures over three metres wide and belongs to the Belvedere in Vienna. The newly dead crowd the banks of the Acheron, the river of the underworld. Hermes, guide of souls, strides through them with his serpent staff. They grab at him and beg him to slow down. He walks on. In the distance, Charon rows his boat towards them, and the sight of it fills the crowd with terror. Once they cross, there is no return.

THE LOOK
Pale, ghostly figures against black water and a smoky sky. Dramatic and dark. Suits a study, hallway, library or large feature wall.

THE PRINT
A fine art reproduction of the original painting on 240gsm matte paper. Rich colour, no glare.

Sizes: A5, A4, A3, A2, A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches. Custom sizes on request. Frames: black, white or oak, or unframed.

Printed locally in the UK, Europe, the US, Canada and Australia, at the location closest to you. Free tracked shipping, no customs fees.

Please note: each print is reproduced from a museum photograph of the original painting. Larger sizes show the canvas weave, brushwork and age cracks up close, details not visible in these photos or smaller prints. Like the painting itself, it is best viewed from a short distance.
