DESCRIPTION
Still Life with Books by Jan Lievens, around 1627 to 1628, printed as a Dutch Golden Age poster on 240gsm matte paper. Sizes A5 to A1 and 12x16 to 24x36 inches, framed or unframed.

ABOUT THE PAINTING
Lievens painted this in Leiden around 1627, aged about 20. For years experts credited it to Rembrandt, his close contemporary. A 2014 Rijksmuseum examination confirmed Lievens as the painter. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam bought it in 1963, and it hangs there today. Nothing here is what it seems. The lute is only an empty lute case. The books are hollow bindings, limp leather and parchment covers once used to hold bills. Every object is old, worn and worthless. The message is vanitas: all things pass.

THE LOOK
Warm browns, parchment cream and soft pewter grey. Quiet, scholarly and dark. Suits a study, library, home office or bookshelf wall.

THE PRINT
A fine art reproduction of the original painting on 240gsm matte paper. Rich colour, no glare.

Sizes: A5, A4, A3, A2, A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches. Custom sizes on request. Frames: black, white or oak, or unframed.

Printed locally in the UK, Europe, the US, Canada and Australia, at the location closest to you. Free tracked shipping, no customs fees.

Please note: each print is reproduced from a museum photograph of the original painting. Larger sizes show the canvas weave, brushwork and age cracks up close, details not visible in these photos or smaller prints. Like the painting itself, it is best viewed from a short distance.

REAL ART, NOT AI
Every print in our shop starts with a real painting from a museum collection. We research each work and prepare the file for print. We never sell AI-generated art.
