Death on a Pale Horse Poster, Albert Pinkham Ryder, Grim Reaper Art, Gothic Wall Decor

DESCRIPTION
The Race Track (Death on a Pale Horse) by Albert Pinkham Ryder, around 1896 to 1908, printed as a gothic art poster on 240gsm matte paper. Sizes A5 to A1 and 12x16 to 24x36 inches, framed or unframed.

ABOUT THE PAINTING
A true story sits behind this painting. Ryder ate his meals at the Hotel Albert in New York, run by his brother. A waiter there told him he had staked his $500 savings on a horse called Hanover in an 1888 race. Ryder advised against it. Hanover came third, and the waiter died by suicide. Ryder said the news formed a cloud over his mind he could not throw off. He worked on the canvas for years and did not want to part with it. Death rides a pale horse around an empty track, scythe raised. A snake, the sign of temptation, waits in the foreground. The title echoes the Book of Revelation. The Cleveland Museum of Art bought the painting in 1928, and it hangs there today.

THE LOOK
Dark olive, umber and ghostly white under a stormy sky. Brooding and spare. Suits a study, hallway, library or gothic gallery wall.

THE PRINT
A fine art reproduction of the original painting on 240gsm matte paper. Rich colour, no glare.
