Seller's description

La Belle Dame sans Merci by Frank Dicksee, about 1902, as a framed print in an antique gold frame on a cream wall. A red-haired woman in a pink gown leans down from a dark horse towards a knight in armour who walks beside her through a flowering meadow.

DESCRIPTION
La Belle Dame sans Merci by Frank Dicksee, shown at the Royal Academy in 1902, printed as a Pre-Raphaelite style art poster on 240gsm matte paper. Sizes A5 to A1 and 12x16 to 24x36 inches, framed or unframed.

ABOUT THE PAINTING
Dicksee took his subject from John Keats's 1819 ballad. The title means the beautiful lady without mercy. In the poem, a knight meets a faery woman in a meadow, sets her on his horse and falls under her spell. He wakes alone on a cold hillside, pale and haunted. Dicksee paints the moment before the fall. The knight in polished armour throws back his arms and surrenders as she bends down from the horse towards him. Only the withered leaves brushing his arm hint at what comes next. The painting hangs in Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, a gift to the city in 1913.

THE LOOK
Rose pink, polished silver and deep green, lit by evening sun. Romantic with an edge of menace. Suits a bedroom, reading nook, study or gallery wall.

THE PRINT
A fine art reproduction of the original painting on 240gsm matte paper. Rich colour, no glare.

Sizes: A5, A4, A3, A2, A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches. Custom sizes on request. Frames: black, white or oak, or unframed.

Printed locally in the UK, Europe, the US, Canada and Australia, at the location closest to you. Free tracked shipping, no customs fees.

Please note: each print is reproduced from a museum photograph of the original painting. Larger sizes show the canvas weave, brushwork and age cracks up close, details not visible in these photos or smaller prints. Like the painting itself, it is best viewed from a short distance.
