A shimmering gold mosaic, a pearl-studded arch, cypress trees and doves in the manner of a Byzantine apse give the artwork presence across a room. The silver Dino, standing head-on like an icon, invites a closer look. Above a desk or in a garage lounge, it's a conversation piece for anyone who knows what that name means.

The subject is a 1972 Dino 246 GT coupe in silver, an E-series car from the third and last series. Pininfarina drew it and Scaglietti built the body around a 2.4-litre V6 mounted crosswise behind the seats. It carries the name of Enzo Ferrari's son Alfredo, known as Dino, and was sold under the Dino name rather than as a Ferrari.

Every car was a drawing before it was a car. We start with the finished car and draw it back to that first decision, until the proportion is honest and the stance is right and you would know it from across the room without a badge.
