Gold, red, green and violet fireworks bursting over a harbour at night give the artwork presence across a room. The red MX-5 on the wet quay, top down and pop-up headlamps raised, invites a closer look. Above a desk or in a garage lounge, it's a conversation piece for anyone who knows what that name means.

The subject is a 1990 MX-5 in Classic Red, an original Australian car on its 14-inch seven-spoke wheels. The first MX-5 arrived in 1989 with a 1.6-litre twin-cam four, pop-up headlamps and a folding soft top, sold as the Miata in North America and the Eunos Roadster in Japan, and it became the best-selling two-seat roadster in history.

Every car was a drawing before it was a car. We start with the finished car and draw it back to that first decision, until the proportion is honest and the stance is right and you would know it from across the room without a badge.

The year and the details describe the car. This is a contemporary artwork by an independent design house, not a period factory document, and not affiliated with Mazda. Artwork created in our studio with help from AI, which we check and finish detail by detail before print.
