A crooked painted town at night in teal, black and bone white with glowing orange windows, in the manner of a 1920s Expressionist film set, gives the artwork presence across a room. The black 928 GTS on the cobbles, headlamps up and lit, invites a closer look. Above a desk or in a garage lounge, it's a conversation piece for anyone who knows what that name means.

The subject is a 1992 928 GTS in Satin Black Metallic with a five-speed manual gearbox. The GTS was the last and most powerful 928, with a 5.4-litre V8 of 350 PS and wider rear wings, and the 928 remains the only sports car named European Car of the Year, in 1978.

Every car was a drawing before it was a car. We start with the finished car and draw it back to that first decision, until the proportion is honest and the stance is right and you would know it from across the room without a badge.
