An endless white tiled floor, a white gridded wall running to the horizon and a deep blue sky with summer clouds, in the manner of the Italian radical architects Superstudio, give the artwork presence across a room. The red and black 512 BB, low and seen from its front corner, invites a closer look. Above a desk or in a garage lounge, it's a conversation piece for anyone who knows what that name means.

The subject is a 1977 512 BB in red over the black lower body, a right-hand-drive car. BB stands for Berlinetta Boxer, its 4.9-litre twelve-cylinder engine lies flat behind the seats, Pininfarina drew the body, and 929 were built from 1976 to 1981.

Every car was a drawing before it was a car. We start with the finished car and draw it back to that first decision, until the proportion is honest and the stance is right and you would know it from across the room without a badge.
