Wildstyle graffiti in hot pink, lime, blue and orange on an old brick wall, in the manner of early 1980s New York street art, above a rain-wet street full of reflections, gives the artwork presence across a room. The stainless DMC-12, seen from behind with both gull-wing doors raised, invites a closer look. Above a desk or in a garage lounge, it's a conversation piece for anyone who knows what that name means.

The subject is a 1981 DMC-12 in unpainted brushed stainless steel with its gull-wing doors open. Giorgetto Giugiaro drew it at Italdesign, Lotus engineered its steel backbone chassis, a 2.85-litre V6 sits in the tail, and about 9,000 were built at Dunmurry in Northern Ireland.

Every car was a drawing before it was a car. We start with the finished car and draw it back to that first decision, until the proportion is honest and the stance is right and you would know it from across the room without a badge.
