Highlights

THE GREY LADY ALWAYS COMES ON CHRISTMAS EVE. THIS YEAR, SHE BROUGHT COMPANY.

Christmas Eve, 1887. Snow has buried the road to Wintermere Hall, and the telegraph wire is down. Sir Ambrose Wintermere — mill owner, magistrate and the meanest man in Westmorland — has gathered his family and guests for a goose, a grudge and his favourite tradition: at midnight, by candlelight, he tells the legend of the Grey Lady, the drowned bride who comes to the garden doors whenever a Wintermere is about to die. On the first stroke of midnight the doors fly open, every candle dies, and a pale lady glows on the terrace. By the twelfth stroke, Sir Ambrose is dead in his chair. Was it the ghost — or someone sitting in the dark beside him?
