A designer's tape drawing of the 308 profile in fine black lines on warm white, with 308 GTS in black italics at the top left, gives the artwork presence across a room. The yellow 308 GTS, low and seen from its front corner with the roof panel fitted, invites a closer look. Above a desk or in a garage lounge, it's a conversation piece for anyone who knows what that name means.

The subject is a 1978 308 GTS in Giallo Fly over dark brown leather, a North American specification car. The GTS is the targa-topped 308, introduced at the 1977 Frankfurt Motor Show, its 2.9-litre V8 is rated at 255 PS in European form and 240 PS with North American emissions equipment, and Leonardo Fioravanti of Pininfarina drew the body.

Every car was a drawing before it was a car. We start with the finished car and draw it back to that first decision, until the proportion is honest and the stance is right and you would know it from across the room without a badge.
