Montreal in huge cream lettering across a black sheet, a big orange sun over a lake with blue-grey mountains, and a pale sandy shore give the artwork presence across a room. The orange Montreal, low and seen from its left front corner, invites a closer look. Above a desk or in a garage lounge, it's a conversation piece for anyone who knows what that name means.

The subject is a 1972 Montreal by Bertone in bright orange over a houndstooth cloth interior. The Montreal was first shown as a concept car at Expo 67 in Montreal, which gave the car its name, Marcello Gandini of Bertone drew the body, and its 2.6-litre dry-sump V8, inspired by the Tipo 33 racing engine, makes 200 PS through a five-speed ZF gearbox.

Every car was a drawing before it was a car. We start with the finished car and draw it back to that first decision, until the proportion is honest and the stance is right and you would know it from across the room without a badge.
