Highlights

Enter your shifts, customer demand and the task times of each station – Excel calculates takt time, finds the bottleneck, shows what the line can really make per day and tells you where to move work.

✔ Takt time in seconds from shifts, breaks and demand
✔ Bottleneck station found – operator- or machine-paced
✔ Real output per day and what to do: move work, remove waste, add people
✔ Instant download: BLANK + EXAMPLE · Quick Start PDF
✔ Built by a production manager · one-time purchase, no subscription, no macros

▶ Requires Microsoft Excel 2016 or newer on a Windows or Mac computer. Not for Google Sheets, Apple Numbers or mobile apps.

The line has 7 stations and 8 people – but which station really sets the pace? Is it the operators, or the machine? Can the line make today's demand? This Takt Time & Line Balancing Calculator answers these questions in minutes, without a stopwatch spreadsheet you have to build yourself. It also handles the two things most simple takt calculators get wrong: batch tasks (refill a hopper every 50 units, close a case of 6) and machine-paced stations (a sealer or flow-wrapper running 900 units per hour).

Built by a production manager who balances food packing lines.

WHAT IT DOES
• Takt time and planned cycle from shifts, breaks, planned stops, demand and planning efficiency
• Up to 15 stations and 40 tasks – station, time per cycle, units per cycle and type for every task
• Units per cycle: batch, case and refill tasks converted to seconds per unit automatically
• Machine rate per station (units/h) – the station time is the slower of the people and the machine
• Bottleneck station, output per day, minimum operators and balance efficiency
• Status per station: OVER TAKT · AT LIMIT · OK · EMPTY, and "pace set by: Machine / Operators"
• WHAT TO DO: plain-language advice, e.g. "Move about 2.8 s of work to station 5"
• Yamazumi chart: value-added, non-value-added, walking & waiting and machine waiting per station against takt and planned cycle
• Input check: wrong station numbers, missing times or types are flagged and results are greyed out until fixed – no silent wrong answers

HOW IT WORKS
1. SETUP: shifts, breaks, planned stops, demand per day, stations with operators and (optional) machine rate.
2. TASKS: list each work element you can see and time – station, time per cycle, units per cycle and type.
3. BALANCE: read takt, bottleneck and output per day, follow the advice, move tasks and watch the chart update.
The HOW_IT_WORKS sheet explains every field and every calculation with a worked example, plus the most common mistakes.

WHO IT'S FOR
Production managers, industrial and process engineers, lean and CI leaders, supervisors and small manufacturers – food packing, ready meals, assembly, packaging, electronics – who balance manual or semi-automatic lines in Excel.

LIMITS
• Scope: one line and one product (or a product family with similar times) per file
• 15 stations, 40 tasks
• You assign tasks to stations – the file calculates and advises. No automatic task assignment or mixed-model balancing
• Times are averages you enter (from observation or standard times) – no stopwatch or video function
• No macros. Sheets are protected without a password to prevent accidental damage

FAQ
Q: Does it work in Google Sheets?
A: No. It is built and tested for Microsoft Excel 2016 or newer on Windows or Mac desktop.
Q: A task is done once per batch or per case – how do I enter it?
A: Enter the time of one cycle and how many units it serves in "Units per cycle", e.g. 74 s for a batch of 84. The file uses 0.88 s per unit.
Q: My packing machine runs 850 units per hour – where does that go?
A: In SETUP, "Machine rate" of that station. If the machine is slower than the people, the station shows "pace set by: Machine" and the advice says more people will not help.
Q: What does 0.5 operators mean?
A: One person shared 50 % between two stations.
Q: Can I balance several products?
A: Use one file per product (or product family) – save a copy and change the times.
