Symbolism
In Exodus, the elders who climb the mountain see beneath God's feet "a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heavens for clearness" — livnat ha-sapir. Some of the midrashim go further and say the tablets of the law were cut from that same blue. In the oldest layer of the Jewish imagination, blue is not decoration: it is what the floor of heaven is made of, and what the words were carved into. A six-pointed star hung beneath a single drop of it says the same thing in a much smaller space.
