1920s 1930s Black Devoré Velvet Shawl | Art Deco Fringed Wrap

This is a beautiful vintage black devoré velvet shawl, previously attributed to the 1920s–1930s, featuring a semi-sheer georgette ground, raised velour/velvet pattern and wonderfully long silky knotted fringe.

The fabric is particularly striking. Irregular black velvet streaks and spots run across the sheer ground, creating an almost abstract animal or tiger-stripe effect. Depending on the light, the pattern moves between subtle jet black and richly textured velvet, while the translucent background gives the shawl a wonderfully delicate quality.
Long black fringe runs across the ends, adding movement and drama when the shawl is worn.

The overall look is quintessentially Art Deco: glamorous, dark and theatrical, and beautiful draped over an evening dress. It can be worn across the shoulders as a traditional evening wrap, gathered loosely around the neck as an oversized scarf, or styled asymmetrically to allow the long fringe to fall down the body.

📅 Dating & Provenance
This shawl was previously sold and attributed as a 1920s–1930s black georgette shawl with velour detailing and silky tasselled fringe.

Its semi-sheer ground, raised velvet/velour pattern and dramatic long fringe are certainly evocative of the luxurious evening wraps associated with the Art Deco period.

However, similar devoré and fringed shawls have been produced during later fashion revivals. As there is no surviving maker's or composition label, I cannot independently guarantee the precise date or fibre content.

It is therefore offered with its previous 1920s–1930s attribution, with detailed photographs provided so that its fabric, construction and finish can be viewed closely
