He leaned over the water to drink and fell in love with the face looking back at him.

A fine art print of Narcissus by Gyula Benczúr, Greek mythology wall art for a dark academia study.

ABOUT THE PAINTING
Gyula Benczúr painted Narcissus in 1881, while teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. A beautiful youth rests at the edge of a still pool, lost in his own reflection.

In Ovid's Metamorphoses, the nymph Echo loves Narcissus, but he scorns her and everyone else. As punishment, the gods let him see himself in a spring. He falls in love with the reflection, cannot leave it, and wastes away. Where he lay, a flower grew, which still carries his name. Benczúr became one of Hungary's greatest history painters, and the original hangs in the Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest.

THE LOOK
Soft flesh tones, shaded greens and the dark mirror of the water. Dreamy, sensual and melancholy. Greek mythology wall art with a classical calm, suited to a dark academia study, bedroom or reading room.

THE PRINT
A fine art reproduction of the original painting on 240gsm matte paper. Rich colour, no glare.

Sizes: A5, A4, A3, A2, A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches. Custom sizes on request. Frames: black, white or oak, or unframed.

Printed locally in the UK, Europe, the US, Canada and Australia, at the location closest to you. Free tracked shipping, no customs fees.

Please note: each print is reproduced from a museum photograph of the original painting. Larger sizes show the canvas weave, brushwork and age cracks up close, details not visible in these photos or smaller prints. Like the painting itself, it is best viewed from a short distance.

GIFTING
A thoughtful gift for a birthday or a new home. A myth about beauty and the danger of looking too long.
