Seller's description

Head of a Skeleton with a Burning Cigarette by Vincent van Gogh, 1886, as a framed print in an antique gold frame on a cream wall. A skull and upper spine of a skeleton, a lit cigarette clamped between its teeth, against a dark background.

A skeleton grins out of the dark with a lit cigarette clamped in its teeth. Vincent van Gogh painted it as a student's joke.

A fine art print of Head of a Skeleton with a Burning Cigarette by Vincent van Gogh, memento mori wall art for a dark academia study.

ABOUT THE PAINTING
Van Gogh painted Head of a Skeleton with a Burning Cigarette in early 1886 in Antwerp, where he had enrolled at the art academy. Students there drew skeletons to learn anatomy. Painting them was not part of the lessons, so he made this one in his own time. Look closely at the jaw. The teeth bite down on the cigarette, and a faint trail of smoke drifts to the right.

The joke sits inside an old tradition. A memento mori is a reminder that every life ends, and painters have used skulls for centuries to make the point. Van Gogh turned the solemn skull into dark student humour. Weeks later he left for Paris, where his palette brightened for good. The original hangs in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

THE LOOK
Bone and ochre against a near-black background, with one glowing point at the cigarette tip. Dark, witty and bold on the wall. Gothic home decor for a study, home library or hallway, and moody wall art with a sense of humour.

GIFTING
A wry gift for a birthday, a housewarming or a new home library. A memento mori with a smile.

MORE
More in our Gothic and Memento Mori collection: The Garden of Death by Hugo Simberg, Allegory of Death by Tomás Mondragón and Memento Mori, "To This Favour" by William Michael Harnett.

THE PRINT
A fine art reproduction of the original painting on 240gsm matte paper. Rich colour, no glare.
