ICE CREAM TRUCK MELTDOWN: a math escape room game for Grades 3 and 4
It is the hottest day of the summer at Sunhat Beach, and the freezer in Kiwi the red panda's ice cream truck has stopped. Six parts of the truck are six stations. Each station gives a crew ONE number. The six numbers open the Freezer Lock, and the four-digit freezer code saves the ice cream.

THIS IS A PRINTABLE ESCAPE ROOM GAME for a classroom (4 to 6 teams) or for 1 to 6 children at home. It is not a book and not a worksheet pack: teams move round six stations, write their numbers on a Repair Sheet, and crack one last lock together.

HOW IT PLAYS (45 to 60 minutes)
- Story and warm-up: crews learn the scoop rule (every scoop is the two scoops under it added together)
- Six stations in any order, about 4 to 8 minutes each; every crew starts at a different one
- The Freezer Lock: the six station numbers stack like scoops, then melt into four cups. The cups are the code
- A wrong station number will not stack, so crews find and fix their own slips
- Freezer on! Certificates for everyone

TWO LEVELS, ONE ANSWER KEY
- Single Scoop cards, Grade 3: times tables to 10 x 10, numbers to 1,000, eighths under one whole, times to 2 h 30 min
- Double Scoop cards, Grade 4: dividing numbers up to 150, numbers to 10,000 with rounding, mixed numbers, longer times and routes
- Both levels of a station give the SAME number, so mixed classes and split grades play side by side and you check everyone with one key

EIGHT KINDS OF PUZZLE
- 5 kinds of math pyramid puzzle: Scoop Stack (add and take away), Times Cones (multiply and divide), Sprinkle Jars (fractions), Timer Stack (hours and minutes) and the Freezer Lock (build it, then melt it)
- 3 hands-on puzzles: Ticket Line (cut-out order tickets to sort by place value), Sandwich Slicer (cut a tray into rectangles by area) and Quickest Route (a town map to trace and total)
- A sixth math pyramid, the Round-Up Stack (rounding), is in the free bonus folder
- Stations get a little harder from 1 to 6; the Freezer Lock is the hardest part
- Every card sits one step below the top of its grade, so a crew can finish it together

SKILLS PRACTISED
Multiplication and division facts, place value and ordering numbers, adding and taking away fractions with the same denominator, area and perimeter of rectangles, adding and taking away time, adding several numbers and comparing totals. A skills page lists the US Common Core codes for Grade 3 and Grade 4 (a planning guide; not endorsed by the standards' authors).

WHAT YOU GET (instant download, 4 PDF files)
- Full kit, US Letter (40 pages)
- Full kit, A4 (40 pages)
- Projector slides, 16:9 (12 slides: story, mission, the rule, move-on signal, countdown, finale, answers)
- Tablet edition with tap-to-jump hint and answer buttons (classroom play needs the printed cards)
- Free bonus folder (QR code inside): Second Helpings (4 fast-finisher cards with answers and hints) and ink-saver editions of every page

INSIDE THE KIT
- For the teacher: what to print and how many, a room plan, a 60-minute and a 45-minute plan, a read-aloud script, skills, a 3-page answer key with solved pictures, 3-step hint cards for every puzzle (a nudge, the method, the worked answer)
- For every crew: mission page, Repair Sheet with the warm-up and six scoop tokens, crew badges and job cards
- For the room: six full-color station signs
- The puzzles: 12 station cards (six stations, two levels), two sets of order tickets, two Freezer Lock cards
- Two-up certificates with type-in names

YOU WILL NEED
Printer (color looks best; ink-saver pages are in the bonus folder), paper, scissors, tape, pencils, a crayon or highlighter, scrap paper, a clock. About 30 minutes to print and set up the first time; five order tickets to cut out. Every crew writes on its own cards (or use plastic sleeves and dry-wipe pens to save paper).

GOOD TO KNOW
- Digital download only: nothing is shipped.
- Print at 100% (actual size), single-sided.
- Play times are plans, not promises: classes differ. Hints keep every crew moving.
- A summer story with no holiday theme: it suits end-of-year review, summer school, back to school, or a birthday party.
- Not suitable for children under 3 (small cut-out parts).
- Love math pyramids? Creouts Publishing also publishes math pyramid puzzle books in paperback (search "Creouts Publishing" on Amazon).
