Is your art AI-generated?

No. Every print in our shop is a real painting by a named artist, taken from museum collections and public archives. We research each work and prepare the file for print by hand. We never sell AI-generated art.

Are these original paintings?

No. These are high quality reproduction prints on paper. The originals hang in museums or private collections around the world.

What paper and inks do you use?

We print on 240gsm matte paper with archival, fade-resistant inks. Matte paper reduces glare and gives the colours a soft, painterly finish.

What sizes do you do?

A5, A4, A3, A2 and A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches. Need another size to fit an existing frame? Message us and we'll make a custom print.

Will the whole painting fit my chosen size?

Old paintings rarely match modern paper sizes, so some sizes trim a little from the edges. Each listing tells you which sizes fit best. Message us before ordering if you want to check a crop.

Do your prints come framed?

You choose. Order unframed to use your own frame, or framed and ready to hang in black, white or oak.

How is my print packaged?

Unframed prints ship rolled in a sturdy postal tube. Framed prints ship flat and protected.

Where is my print made, and how much is shipping?

Shipping is free. We have printing partners in the UK, Europe, the US, Canada and Australia, and we print your order at the location closest to you. That means faster delivery and no long journey across the world. Printing and packaging takes 2 to 5 days max. After that, most orders arrive within 3 to 7 working days, with tracking on every order.

What if my print arrives damaged?

Send us photos as proof of damage and we'll send a free replacement.

Three black cats stare out from a velvet-draped room, their yellow eyes fixed on you. They seem to know something you don't.

A fine art print of Three Black Cats by Carl Kahler, black cat wall art for a dark academia reading room.

ABOUT THE PAINTING
Carl Kahler painted Three Black Cats in the second half of the nineteenth century. Three long-haired cats sit on a gilded table among old books and scrolls, with a crimson curtain behind them. Look closely at the curtain. Gold tortoises are embroidered across the velvet. In British folklore a black cat crossing your path brings good luck. In much of Europe, it meant the opposite.

Kahler was an Austrian painter who trained in Munich and won fame for his cats. In San Francisco in 1891, the socialite Kate Birdsall Johnson asked him to paint her forty-two cats in one enormous canvas, My Wife's Lovers. Kahler died in the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Three Black Cats belongs to a private collection.

THE LOOK
Velvet crimson, antique gold and three pools of black fur lit by yellow eyes. Rich, theatrical and a little mysterious, with every cat watching from a different angle. Black cat wall art for a dark academia reading room, a gothic bedroom, a home library or a maximalist gallery wall.

GIFTING
A warm gift for a birthday, a housewarming or a new home library. A loving tribute in memory of a much-missed cat.

MORE
For more witchy companions, see Witches' Sabbath by Francisco Goya in Gothic Memento Mori Art. For more old books by candlelight, see Still Life with Books by Jan Lievens in Dutch Golden Age Prints.

THE PRINT
A fine art reproduction of the original painting on 240gsm matte paper. Rich colour, no glare.

Printed locally in the UK, Europe, the US, Canada and Australia, at the location closest to you. Free tracked shipping, no customs fees.

Please note: each print is reproduced from a museum photograph of the original painting. Larger sizes show the canvas weave, brushwork and age cracks up close, details not visible in these photos or smaller prints. Like the painting itself, it is best viewed from a short distance.
