Seller's description

Her lover has come home from the war at midnight. He lifts her onto his black horse and rides for the graveyard. Under the helmet, he has no face.

A fine art print of The Ballad of Lenore by Horace Vernet, dark romanticism wall art for a dark academia study.

ABOUT THE PAINTING
Bram Stoker borrowed this ballad for the opening chapter of Dracula. As Jonathan Harker’s coach climbs towards the Borgo Pass, a frightened passenger whispers its most famous line: “Denn die Todten reiten schnell.” For the dead travel fast.

Look closely at the rider. A skull glows inside his helmet. Below, sparks fly where a hoof strikes a tomb. Notice the owl in the ivy, the old bird of ill omen. Bram Stoker later quoted the ballad's famous line in Dracula: for the dead travel fast. The original hangs in the Musée d'Arts de Nantes.

THE LOOK
Midnight blacks, smoky greens and one shock of white where the skull catches the light. The whole scene seems to rush past you in the dark. Dark, fast and full of dread. Gothic wall art for a dark academia study, a reading room or a gothic bedroom.

This print has a warm off-white border, like a gallery mount. Vernet's canvas is wider than standard print sizes, so the border keeps the whole painting in view, from the sparks under the horse's hooves to his signature, with nothing cropped.

GIFTING
A haunting gift for a birthday, a housewarming or a new home library. A ghost story told in paint.

MORE
More dark romanticism in our Dark Romanticism Art collection: The Nightmare by Henry Fuseli and Requiescat by Briton Riviere. For Death on horseback, see The Race Track (Death on a Pale Horse) by Albert Pinkham Ryder in Gothic Memento Mori Art.

THE PRINT
A fine art reproduction of the original painting on 240gsm matte paper. Rich colour, no glare.

Sizes: A5, A4, A3, A2, A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches. Custom sizes on request. Frames: black, white or oak, or unframed.

Printed locally in the UK, Europe, the US, Canada and Australia, at the location closest to you. Free tracked shipping, no customs fees.

Please note: each print is reproduced from a museum photograph of the original painting. Larger sizes show the canvas weave, brushwork and age cracks up close, details not visible in these photos or smaller prints. Like the painting itself, it is best viewed from a short distance.
