ABOUT THE PAINTING
Caravaggio painted Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness in 1604. John was the prophet who lived in the desert and baptised Jesus. Painters usually gave him a lamb and a halo. Caravaggio gave him neither, only a thin reed cross, a scarlet cloak and a face half in shadow.

This is chiaroscuro, Italian for light and dark. Caravaggio throws a strong light across the body and lets the rest fall into night. Notice the green leaves at John's feet, small signs of life in the wilderness. The Roman banker Ottavio Costa commissioned the painting for a chapel on his estate near Genoa. It now hangs in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City.

THE LOOK
