Salome has danced for King Herod and won her prize. Now the head of John the Baptist rises before her, blazing with light, and she points straight at it.

A fine art print of The Apparition by Gustave Moreau, Salome wall art for a dark academia study.

ABOUT THE PAINTING
Gustave Moreau painted The Apparition between 1876 and 1877. In the Gospels, the daughter of Herodias dances for King Herod and asks for the head of John the Baptist as her reward. Tradition names her Salome. Moreau paints the moment after. The head hangs in the air inside a halo of light, still dripping blood.

Moreau was a leader of Symbolism, a movement which painted dreams, moods and inner visions rather than the everyday world. Notice how no one else in the palace reacts. Perhaps the vision is Salome's alone. A watercolour version caused a stir at the Paris Salon of 1876. This oil hangs in the Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

THE LOOK
Burnished gold, dusky amber and a burst of white light, with Salome's robe in flame red. The palace glitters like a jewel box, and the vision blazes at its heart. Opulent, eerie and hypnotic. Gothic wall art for a dark academia study, a reading room or a dramatic hallway.

This print has a warm off-white border, like a gallery mount. Moreau's canvas is wider than standard print sizes, so the border keeps the whole painting in view, from Salome's trailing robe to the palace guard and Moreau's signature, with nothing cropped.

GIFTING
A striking gift for a birthday, a housewarming or a new home library. A Bible story told as a dream.
