━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

On the last night of October 1893, all of Boston wanted to be inside Hollowell House. The great brick mansion on Mount Vernon Street had a reputation even before Madame Seraphine Vey came to live in its back parlour, and by that autumn she was the most famous medium in New England. Senators had sat at her table. Widows travelled from Philadelphia to hear their husbands’ voices. And on Hallowe’en, the night the veil between the worlds is thinnest, she would hold one final circle before sailing for London.

Seven sitters were chosen: Dr Silas Crane, who had come to prove her a fraud; Mrs Eudora Blackwood, who had lost a son in the spring; Tobias Keene, the medium’s manager; old Mrs Ida Fenn, who had not missed a sitting in eleven years; the Reverend Amos Thorne; Mr Gideon Pike, a shipping man; and young Miss Clara Whitcombe. A ninth chair was left empty, as always — the spirit chair, kept for the dead.

Others were in the house that night but not in the circle. Ambrose Hollowell, who owned the house and paid for everything, never sat at the table; he waited in the library across the hall. Felix Dorrance of the *Evening Transcript* had been refused a place and watched from a chair by the window, notebook on his knee. Professor Julian Marsh, president of the Boston Spiritualist Society, arrived after the doors were closed and was left to wait in the hall.

Behind Madame Vey’s chair stood her spirit cabinet: a tall black wardrobe with curtains in front, where the medium sat in trance while voices spoke and pale hands appeared in the dark. Beside it, on a tripod, waited the camera. Every sitter Madame ever received was photographed on their first visit, and the cabinet cards went into her Spirit Album.

At eleven o’clock the doors were closed, the gas was turned down, and the sitters joined hands round the table.

The police arrested Miss Lavinia Pratt. But before they took her away, she slipped you a note:

“Inspector — At the stroke of midnight Madame’s candles went out, and I fired the flash for the spirit photograph exactly as she taught me. When the lamps were lit again, Madame Vey was dead in her chair and her water glass smelled of bitter almonds. The plate I took shows a veiled figure stepping out of the spirit cabinet. Nobody believes me, because the circle was holding hands. But I know the cabinet has a panel at the back, and so did everyone Madame trusted. Every sitter she ever had is in her Spirit Album — two hundred and sixteen cabinet cards, mine among them — and in her Appointment Book. I have brought you both, with everything else we found in the séance room before dawn. Please. Someone walked into that room out of the dark, and walked out again.”
