A canyon that photographs itself needs two and a half hours of exact sun. This one keeps the trick and plants flowers in it.

Antelope Canyon, on Navajo land near Page, Arizona, is the most photographed slot canyon on Earth, almost entirely because of what happens inside it for roughly two and a half hours a day — a narrow shaft of direct sun falls between the walls from late March to early October, lighting the dust in the air until the whole passage glows. One image of it sold for $6.5 million; another became a default desktop wallpaper seen by millions who never knew its name.

This passage borrows that same architecture — walls closing in toward a bright, inevitable opening — and plants it with colour the real canyon has never had: a path crowded in pink and coral wildflowers instead of bare sandstone. The small figure walking toward the light, seen only from behind, is an older device than the canyon itself — painters have used exactly that view, a traveller’s back to us, since the early 1800s, to put the viewer inside the walk instead of outside it.

An entry hall gets a destination at the end of it; a reading corner gets somewhere worth walking toward.
