Airbrush portraiture built its whole look on subtraction in the early 1980s: flat colour, a handful of decisive lines, nothing to hide behind. A single block of warm skin tone, a sleek dark bob, one bold red mouth — the style borrowed its economy from Art Deco and from Japanese woodblock printmaking, both traditions that trust a flat shape over a modelled one. It’s the same visual language behind one of the most recognised album covers of the decade.

This print doubles the figure and keeps the attitude doubled with it: two women seated back to back on identical chairs, each glancing over one shoulder as if caught mid-exit from the same room, red-soled heels planted in a wide gap of pale ground between them. A small rust sun and a scatter of dry grass are the only other marks on the page — the empty space is doing as much work as the figures.
