Ten heads, ten arms, ten feet, and a crescent moon on her crown: Goddess Mahakali, painted by an artist whose name is not known.
A woven 100% cotton tapestry wall hanging of Goddess Mahakali, from an Indian Company painting.

THE WORK
Unknown artist, Company painting, India
Goddess Mahakali
Date unknown · painting
Collection: National Museum, New Delhi (acc. no. 76.674)
Not affiliated with or endorsed by the National Museum, New Delhi.

Maha-Kali means Great Kali, and the museum notes that the prefix Maha stresses her sovereignty over time (kala). Her ten heads and ten feet match the meditation verse that opens the first episode of the Devi Mahatmya, the scripture of the Goddess recited at Navratri. In that episode Vishnu sleeps on the cosmic ocean. Brahma praises the Goddess who holds him in yogic sleep; she releases him, and he wakes to defeat the demons Madhu and Kaitabha.

The museum calls Mahakali a popular deity of Bengal. Unlike many images of Kali, this one shows no Shiva beneath her feet. All ten stand on a green hill, before a great red disc.

The museum catalogues the work as Company painting, the name for work by Indian artists in the 18th and 19th centuries, many of whom painted for European patrons. It gives no date or place for this one.

A note on this work: Mahakali is a living goddess, worshiped by millions. This piece is offered as a wall hanging, to be hung with care and respect. Please don't use it as a floor, beach or picnic blanket.
