Every New Year’s Eve since 1955, the skiers of Snowcrest Lodge carry red flares down the mountain in a ribbon of fire, and the man who built the lodge skis last. At 11:20 pm he tells the whole summit hut he has something to say at midnight — something he should have said twelve years ago. He never reaches the bottom.

The sheriff calls it an accident. His daughter doesn’t believe a word of it — and she has every finish-line photo and the register everyone signed at the top.
