Specifications

The Golden Star has vanished from Santa's Big Tree on Christmas Eve! Seven cartoon suspects were nearby, and the star could be hiding in any of seven places. Your young detectives solve 12 puzzle clues, cross out suspects and places one by one, and crack the case. Nobody gets hurt: someone took the star, and kids find out who and where.

Who Stole the Golden Star? is a printable Christmas detective game that fits ages 8-10, with easy-to-medium puzzles and two multi-step stock audits. Best for newer detectives who enjoy a mix of quick wins and longer puzzles; this is not a hard escape room. Every clue clears exactly ONE suspect or ONE place. When one suspect and one place are left, the case is closed. The thief is never named in a clue, so kids really do solve it by elimination.

THE 12 PUZZLE CLUES
- Footprint match and fingerprint match
- Two picture codes with their own decoders
- A glitter-trail maze that spells a place
- Two backwards (mirror) notes that describe a suspect by their job or a place by its smell, so kids look them up in the Suspect Files and on the map
- Two simple logic grids
- Two stock audits: count the picture, then calculate dry mitten pairs or leftover candy canes
- A map walk with step-by-step directions

WHAT YOU GET - FIVE PDF FILES
- US Letter colour player edition, 25 pages
- A4 colour player edition, 25 pages
- US Letter low-ink player edition, 25 pages
- A4 low-ink player edition, 25 pages
- Host Guide and Answer Key, 14 pages: Letter pages 1-7 and the same pages in A4 on pages 8-14

Each player edition has the SAME game: cover, read-aloud case brief, seven suspect files, North Pole map, the 12 clue cards, a Case Sheet and Case Log (one per team, cheap to print many), 12 hint cards with two hints each, detective badges, props (the Golden Star and evidence tags), "Case Closed" signs, place signs, certificates and an "Open When Solved" ending card with a note from the culprit. Choose your paper size and ink version; you do not need to print every file.

The Host Guide has setup, rules for solo, teams and a whole class of up to 30, a hide-it-around-the-house plan, the full answer key with pictured solutions, and the read-aloud ending.

PLAY IT YOUR WAY
- Solo detective: one child works through the clue cards, then reads the ending card after naming the thief and hiding place.
- Teams of 2-5: share one set of clue cards, or print one per team.
- Classroom (up to 30 kids): tape the clue cards around the room as stations.
- Hide-it-around-the-house: tape the place signs in different rooms and hide the clue cards for a treasure hunt.

AGES, PACE AND ADULT HELP
Designed for readers ages 8-10. Adults can read the case brief and offer the supplied hints. Children under 8 may join an older team as picture spotters, but the codes and logic grids are not designed for their independent play. This is not a whole-group puzzle game for ages 5-9.

Self-paced: no guaranteed hour or child-tested duration. Confident solvers may finish the easier clues quickly. The maze, logic grids and stock audits provide the longer challenges. Choose tabletop play for a quiet activity, or add searching with the optional hidden-clue setup.

QUICKEST PRINT AND SETUP
One team needs 16 single-sided sheets from ONE player edition: pages 2-16 plus page 25, the ending. Keep page 25 face down. Add page 17 for the Case Log and pages 18-19 for optional hints. Read the host guide on screen. Each additional team needs pages 3-5 and 16 (4 sheets), plus its own optional Case Log; teams can share clues.

Tabletop setup: print, lay out the clue sheets, give out pencils and keep the ending hidden. No cutting needed. Hidden-clue play adds cutting, taping seven place signs and hiding 12 clues; allow extra preparation. The adult keeps the star out of sight and reveals it only after all 12 clues are solved and the correct thief and place are named. Printer speed and room layout vary, so no measured preparation time is promised.

PRINTING AND USE
- Print single-sided at 100% / Actual Size on regular paper.
- Low-ink editions use white pages and grey pictures. All puzzles work without colour.
- You need paper, a printer and pencils. Scissors and tape are handy for the optional hint cards, props and hidden-clue version. A mirror or bright window helps read the backwards notes.
- No locks, envelopes or website needed during play.
- Ready-to-print files; not editable.
