A flower bed that loves the sun, tolerates drought, and won't take up your weekends.

This PDF is a complete plan for a 15m long by 2m deep Mediterranean flower bed, designed to be installed along a wall, fence, or hedge. It tells you where to plant what, how many plants to buy, how to plant them, and how to care for them afterward. I'm a landscape designer, and I designed it for the Southwest of France.

TRADE KNOWLEDGE, WRITTEN IN BLACK AND WHITE
What I put in this guide, I do in the field. A mound when the soil is heavy, the root collar at ground level, pruning in green growth and never in old wood, gravel kept away from the base of the plant: these techniques are usually passed down from hand to hand on the worksite, among professionals. I've written them down here so you can have them too, along with the mistakes I see most often and how to avoid them. The first mistake is choosing a plant because it's pretty, without knowing anything about it, or planting one that will grow too large and smother the rest. That's why each plant has its own fact sheet, with its mature height and needs. The second is not respecting planting principles and trying to go too fast: gardening should remain a time for relaxation and passion. Keep what works for you, and jot down in your notebook what your garden teaches you in turn.

THE FLOWERBED IN BRIEF
Approximately 30 m². Minimal pruning required, no regular weeding needed thanks to the mineral mulch. Watering is necessary for the first two summers to help the plant establish; after that, a little extra watering during heat waves is sufficient.

GOOD TO KNOW
- The large plan is designed for a flowerbed approximately 15m wide, with its back to a wall or fence. Need something shorter? Use the compact 6m version; it's included in the file.
- The height of the strawberry tree, the crape myrtle and the olive tree requires regular pruning.
- The dates and dimensions are guidelines. The soil, wind and microclimate of your garden can cause them to shift.
