THE STORY BEHIND IT
When a newspaper reported in 1897 that the famous Mississippi riverboat author was gravely ill, he told a reporter that the report of his death was an exaggeration.

Before he became one of America's best-loved writers and humorists (1835-1910), he piloted steamboats on the Mississippi River. In 1897, after a newspaper mixed him up with an ailing cousin, he wrote that the report of his death was an exaggeration; the famous "greatly exaggerated" line is a popular paraphrase of that note. This chibi version holds a little riverboat and his pen. A warm, wry shirt for nappers everywhere.
