He was of Afro-Caribbean descent: his grandmother, Marie-Cessette, was an enslaved woman of African descent in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), and his father, Thomas-Alexandre, rose to become a general in the French army. Alexandre Dumas loved food as much as stories, and his last great project was a giant dictionary of cooking, published in 1873, after his death.
