THE MIXED-UP MUSIC BOX: a printable music class escape room game for Grades 3 to 5
In Chimewick, a little village on a turquoise lake across the water from a golden pyramid, Tirra the lyrebird makes music boxes. Tonight is the Lakeside Concert, and Tirra's biggest music box will open the show. But a gust of wind blew through the workshop: song sheets flew, the pins slipped off the music box's roll, the tune got mixed up and the lid clicked shut with a word lock. Six music jobs give six pin words, and the Pin Roll turns them into the lock word.

IT TEACHES THE BASICS, THEN PUTS THEM TO WORK
Two Music Basics pages (one set per crew, or project them as a 10-minute mini-lesson) teach the notation first: the staff and treble-clef note names with middle C and ledger lines, bass-clef note names, steps and skips, dynamics from pp to ff with crescendo and decrescendo, note and rest values from whole to eighth with dotted notes, time signatures and measures, and road-map signs (repeats, 1st and 2nd endings, D.C. al Fine). Then every station puts one idea to work, so students learn it and apply it right away. A friendly introduction for beginners, or a lively review for students who already read music.

THIS IS A PRINTABLE ESCAPE ROOM GAME for a music class (4 to 6 teams) or for 1 to 6 children at home, in a music club or a lesson. It is not a book and not a worksheet pack: crews move around six stations, write each pin word on a Pin Log, and open one last lock together. Everything is paper: no padlocks, boxes, instruments, audio or devices needed.

HOW IT PLAYS (65 to 80 minutes, or two 40-minute music lessons)
- Music Basics (5 to 10 minutes): learn the notation together; crews keep the two pages on their table
- Warm-up: match four instruments to their families
- Six stations, about 8 to 10 minutes each; every crew starts at a different one
- The Pin Roll: look up each pin word and draw its pin on the music box's roll. A right answer's pin lands in a GOLD RING; every likely slip lands outside one, so crews see which station to check again
- The six letters spell the lock word and the music box opens. Joined up, the pins make a tune shaped like a pyramid (C E G C' G E C): play or sing it together. Music Box Maestro certificates for everyone

SIX MUSIC STATIONS (numbered from the easiest to the hardest)
- 1 The Song Sheet Rack, Spelled in Notes: name treble-clef notes on lines and spaces; the letters spell a word (Two Turns: ledger lines and rests to skip)
- 2 The Volume Shelf, Loud and Soft: put dynamics in order from pp to ff (Two Turns: symbols only, loudest first, one card to leave out)
- 3 The Metronome Bench, The Beat Stack: write each note's beats and add them up a math pyramid (Two Turns: eighth notes and dotted notes, halves)
- 4 The Measure Table, The Missing Beats: fill each measure with the one note or rest that fits the time signature (Two Turns: 3/4, 2/4 and 4/4)
- 5 The Comb Stairs, The Melody Steps: a melody pyramid maze read on the staff; every step down is one step up the music alphabet (Two Turns: skips, with ledger-line notes)
- 6 The Road Map Wall, The Road Map: follow repeat signs and count the measures you play (Two Turns: 1st and 2nd endings and D.C. al Fine)

TWO LEVELS, ONE ANSWER KEY
- One Turn cards, Grades 3-4: notes inside the staff with a note-name key, Italian dynamic words, whole beats in a 4-row stack, 4/4 measures, steps on a 5-row melody pyramid, one repeat
- Two Turns cards, Grades 4-5: ledger lines, dynamic symbols only, halves of beats in a 5-row stack, 3/4 and 2/4 with rests, skips on a 6-row pyramid, endings and D.C. al Fine
- Both levels of a station give the SAME pin word, so mixed classes play side by side and you check everyone with one key
- Music words (staff, dynamics, beat, measure, step and skip, repeat sign) are on every crew's Pin Log and on a slide

3 KINDS OF MATH PYRAMID PUZZLE
- In the kit: the Beat Stack (note values added up a pyramid)
- In the free bonus folder: the Rest Stack (a pyramid of rests' beats, worked back) and the Same-Beat Steps (a pyramid maze of rhythms that last 2 beats)
- Plus a melody pyramid maze at Station 5 (a note-reading maze, not a math pyramid)

WHAT YOU GET (instant download, 4 PDF files)
- Full kit, US Letter (39 pages)
- Full kit, A4 (39 pages)
- Projector slides, 16:9 (12 slides: story, mission, music words, move signal, countdown, the Pin Roll, the box opens, answers)
- Tablet edition with tap-to-jump hint and answer buttons (classroom play needs the printed cards)
- Free bonus folder (QR code inside): Encore Night (4 fast-finisher cards with answers and hints: The Rest Stack and The Same-Beat Steps, two math pyramids; The Lakeside Band, an instrument-family logic grid; The Low Notes, bass-clef note names) and ink-saver editions of every page

INSIDE THE KIT
- For the teacher: what to print and how many (with sheet counts), a room plan, an 80-minute, a 65-minute and a two-lesson plan, a step-by-step script that also works without a projector, skills with National Core Arts Standards (Music) codes, an answer key with solved pictures, 3-step hint cards for every puzzle (where to start, the method, the worked answer)
- For every crew: two Music Basics pages (the notation, taught with engraved examples), mission page, Pin Log with the warm-up, music words and three hint tokens, crew badges and job cards (Conductor, Writer, Checker, Runner)
- For the room: six full-color station signs
- The puzzles: 12 station cards (six stations, two levels) and the Pin Roll card
- Two-up "Music Box Maestro" certificates with type-in names

YOU WILL NEED
Printer (color looks best; ink-saver pages are in the bonus folder), paper, pencils, a clock and tape for the signs. 30 to 40 minutes to print and set up the first time. Every crew writes on its own cards (or use plastic sleeves and dry-erase pens to save paper). An instrument is optional, just for playing the finale tune.

GOOD TO KNOW
- Digital download only: nothing is shipped.
- Print at 100% (actual size), single-sided.
- All music on the cards is original and engraved for print: real clefs, notes, rests, time signatures, repeat signs and endings.
- Great for a music lesson, a sub day, end-of-term fun, a band or piano club, or a rainy afternoon at home.
- Chimewick, Tirra and this story are made up. Lyrebirds are real: they live in the forests of eastern Australia and can copy many sounds they hear. Music boxes are real too: pins on a turning roll pluck the teeth of a metal comb.
- Play times are plans, not promises: classes differ. Hints keep every crew moving.
- Not tested with a class: it was solved and set up from the printed pages alone by separate AI sessions, and their notes were acted on.
- Love math pyramids? Creouts Publishing also publishes math pyramid puzzle books in paperback (search "Creouts Publishing" on Amazon).

LICENSE
