Seller's description

A Venetian gondolier turns his head and looks past us, towards water we never see.

A fine art print of Head Study of a Gondolier by Dominik Skutecký, antique portrait wall art for a dark academia study.

ABOUT THE PAINTING
Dominik Skutecký painted Head Study of a Gondolier in 1903. It is a study, painted for its own sake: one man in profile against a plain blue-grey wall. Skutecký gives everything to the face. Look closely at the sun-warmed red of the cheek and the bristle of the moustache, then at the shirt, laid in with a few loose strokes of blue and white.

Skutecký trained at the art academies of Vienna and Venice. From 1876 to 1889 he lived in Venice and painted its street life and churches, before he settled in Banská Bystrica, in today's Slovakia. Notice the signature at lower right. It reads "Skutezky", the spelling he used in his lifetime. The original belongs to the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava.

THE LOOK
Sun-warmed skin, a slate-blue wall and the blue and white stripes of a gondolier's shirt. Calm, strong and quietly modern. Portrait painting with the feel of Venice, and vintage wall art for a dark academia study, a hallway or a reading room.

GIFTING
A thoughtful gift for a birthday, a housewarming or Father's Day. A memory of Venice, painted by an artist who lived there for thirteen years.
