Seller's description

Imogen by Herbert Gustave Schmalz, 1888. A young woman with golden curls and a blue cloak grips a sword hilt and scabbard and looks back over her shoulder against dark rocks.

She grips the sword and glances back over her shoulder. Whatever follows her, she will not run unarmed.

A fine art print of Imogen by Herbert Schmalz, Pre Raphaelite wall art for a dark academia reading room.

ABOUT THE PAINTING
Herbert Gustave Schmalz painted Imogen in 1888. She is the heroine of Shakespeare's Cymbeline, a British princess wrongly accused by the husband she loves. She escapes into the Welsh mountains disguised as a boy, and outlasts every lie told about her.

Look closely at her hands. One holds the hilt, the other the scabbard, as if the blade could leave it at any moment. Notice the blue embroidered sleeves and the gold of her hair, painted with the rich detail Schmalz learned from the Pre Raphaelites. This print comes from a Victorian plate printed in Paris by Goupil, the leading art publisher of its day. A surprising footnote: Schmalz changed his surname to Carmichael in 1918, his mother's maiden name.

THE LOOK
Storm blue, burnished gold and deep forest brown against a dark rocky ground. Fierce, romantic and full of movement. Pre Raphaelite wall art for a dark academia study, a reading room or a home library beside your Shakespeare.

GIFTING
A meaningful gift for a birthday, a graduation or a new home library. A Shakespeare heroine who saves herself.

MORE
More Shakespeare in our Pre Raphaelite Art collection: Ophelia by John Everett Millais. For another heroine with a sword, see Joan of Arc by Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

THE PRINT
A fine art reproduction of the original painting on 200gsm matte paper. Rich colour, no glare.

Sizes: A5, A4, A3, A2, A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches. Custom sizes on request. Frames: black, white or oak, or unframed.

Please note: each print is reproduced from a museum photograph of the original painting. Larger sizes show the canvas weave, brushwork and age cracks up close, details not visible in these photos or smaller prints. Like the painting itself, it is best viewed from a short distance.
