Curiosity Print, Horatio Couldery Victorian Cat Wall Art, Tabby Kitten Painting Poster
Item highlights
Seller's description
Three tabby cats creep forward, low and silent. Something small is shut inside the box ahead.
A fine art print of Curiosity by Horatio Henry Couldery, Victorian cat wall art for a dark academia reading nook.
ABOUT THE PAINTING
Horatio Henry Couldery painted Curiosity in Victorian London, where he made his name painting cats and kittens. Two tabbies crouch on the tiled floor, and a third watches from a crate behind them. All three stare at the same small green box.
Look closely at its barred window. A tiny prisoner looks back. Notice the stalks of straw and the striped fur, every hair laid in with a fine brush. That patience won Couldery high praise. John Ruskin called one of his cat paintings the most skilful piece of minute detail in the whole exhibition. Couldery first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1861 and painted animals for the rest of his long life.
THE LOOK
Warm tabby browns, brick red and mossy green in a shadowy room. Tense, funny and full of character. Victorian cat wall art for a reading nook, a home library or a cosy kitchen.
GIFTING
A charming gift for a birthday or a housewarming, or in memory of a much-loved cat.
MORE
More cats in our Dark Romanticism Art collection: Three Black Cats by Carl Kahler. For another animal with character, see Marchesa Luisa Casati with a Greyhound by Giovanni Boldini in our Portrait Paintings collection.
