Seller's description

Siegfried's Rhine Journey by Ferdinand Leeke, 1908, as a framed print in a gold frame. Siegfried in a winged helmet and gold armour blows a horn in a dragon-prowed boat beside a white horse, on green water below grey cliffs.

He stands in the boat and sounds his horn. Behind him lies Brünnhilde's rock. Ahead lies the Rhine, and a betrayal he cannot see.

A fine art print of Siegfried's Rhine Journey by Ferdinand Leeke, Norse mythology wall art for a dark academia study.

ABOUT THE PAINTING
Ferdinand Leeke painted Siegfried's Rhine Journey in 1908. It shows a scene from Götterdämmerung, the last opera in Richard Wagner's Ring cycle, which draws on the Norse and Germanic legends of Sigurd and the Nibelungs. The hero Siegfried has left Brünnhilde and sails down the Rhine in search of adventure, with her horse Grane beside him. The orchestral music which carries him there is also known as Siegfried's Rhine Journey.

Look closely at the bow, carved as a dragon's head, and at the winged helmet and the horn raised to his lips. Around 1889 Siegfried Wagner, the composer's son, who was named after the hero, asked Leeke to paint scenes from ten of his father's operas. They were printed in colour and sold across Europe.

THE LOOK
Jade water, gold armour and a white horse against grey cliffs and a bright sky. Heroic, bright and full of movement. Norse mythology art for a study, a music room or a hallway, and vintage wall art with an opera behind it.

GIFTING
A grand gift for a birthday, a graduation or an opera night. A hero setting out on his last adventure.

MORE
For more Norse legend, see The Valkyrie and The Wild Hunt of Odin by Peter Nicolai Arbo in our Dark Romanticism Art collection. For another knight riding out, see God Speed by Edmund Blair Leighton in Pre Raphaelite Art.
