FICA refund kit for F-1 OPT, CPT and on-campus students: when FICA shouldn’t apply, employer letter template, Form 843 + 8316 steps, claim tracker.

WHAT YOU GET (instant digital download)
- Should FICA apply? F-1, J-1 and M-1 nonresident students on allowed work (on-campus, OPT, CPT) vs F-2 / J-2 family members, students who have become residents, and a change to H-1B (IRS rules, last reviewed Aug. 18, 2026)
- Check your pay: what to look for on pay stubs and in W-2 boxes 4 and 6, with the 6.2% / 1.45% employee rates
- Employer request letter (Word, editable): asks payroll to stop withholding, refund what was taken, issue a W-2c if needed, or give a written statement if they can’t
- The IRS route in plain words: what Form 843 and Form 8316 do, the supporting documents people include, and keeping proof
- Claim tracker (Excel / Google Sheets): pay stub log with FICA flags, withheld vs W-2 vs refunded vs claimed vs received, nine steps with dates and status, document checklist; blank + example

HOW IT WORKS
1. Download the files from your Etsy purchase page right after checkout.
2. Open the PDF on any device. Edit the .docx letter in Word or Google Docs. Open the tracker .xlsx in Excel, or upload it to Google Drive and open with Google Sheets.
3. Read the PDF, log your pay stubs on the tracker, then fill in the brackets in the letter and send it to payroll. The tracker comes in an Example copy (entries marked "Sample — delete") and a blank copy.

WHO IT IS FOR
F-1 students on on-campus jobs, OPT or CPT, and J-1 / M-1 students, who see Social Security and Medicare on their pay stubs or W-2 while they are nonresidents for tax. Not for F-2 / J-2 family members (not exempt). Not for immigration questions.

DETAILS
Based on the IRS page "Foreign student liability for Social Security and Medicare taxes" (checked Oct. 25, 2026). Our own explanations and templates; the IRS forms come from irs.gov. The PDF ends with how MFA can prepare the claim for you.

Important: general information, not tax, legal or immigration advice. Whether you were a nonresident for the pay periods depends on your days and years in the US. Visa questions: ask your school’s international office or an immigration attorney.
