THE STORY BEHIND IT
In 1867, the naturalist John Muir walked about a thousand miles from Kentucky to the Gulf of Mexico, carrying little more than a plant press and a few books. His journal of the trip was later published as A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf.
