THE STORY BEHIND IT
A sugar plum was not really a plum. It was a small candy, a seed or nut coated in layers of hard sugar, and people were enjoying them by the 1600s. The treat danced into Christmas lore when Clement Clarke Moore's poem A Visit from St. Nicholas, first published in 1823, told of children with "visions of sugar-plums" dancing in their heads.
