Livestock Fencing Guide PDF | Electric Fence, Woven Wire and Barbed Wire | Goat, Chicken, Horse and Cattle Fence Plans | Homestead

Build the right fence the first time. The Ultimate Livestock Fencing Guide is a 100-page printable PDF that shows you which fence suits each animal, what it really costs, how long it lasts, and how to build it, one numbered step at a time.

It is part reference book and part build manual:

PART 1, CHOOSE YOUR FENCE
- 12 fence systems compared on cost per foot, install effort, lifespan and upkeep
- Which fence for which animal: a one-page matrix for 10 animals
- Heights, mesh openings and voltages for every animal, and what stops each predator
- Climate table: freezing winters, mild winters, dry, humid, coastal and flood-prone land
- Late-2026 US material prices and whole-fence costs, with a worked one-acre example
- Labour hours, lifespans and a planning page

PART 2, HOW FENCES WORK
- Posts, H-braces, frost heave, rock and sand
- Woven wire style numbers, hinge joint vs fixed knot, galvanizing classes
- Barbed and high-tensile wire
- Electric fencing in 7 pages: how it works, joules vs volts, sizing an energizer, grounding, ground-return systems for dry or frozen ground, wire and tape, voltage targets, testing, lightning and safety
- Livestock panels, poultry and predator mesh, horse-safe fences, offset and trip wires

PART 3, FENCES BY ANIMAL
Chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, rabbits, goats, sheep, pigs, cattle, horses and livestock guardian dogs: how each animal tests a fence, the best options with cost and durability, a spec card, climate notes and common mistakes.

PART 4, 13 STEP-BY-STEP BUILDS
Each with a materials list, tools, time and illustrated steps: before every build, wood H-brace corner, line posts, woven wire, barbed wire, high-tensile electric, energizer and ground system, temporary polywire paddock, electric netting, livestock panels, a predator-proof poultry run, horse fences (no-climb and board) and gates.

PART 5, KEEP IT WORKING
A seasonal maintenance calendar, winterizing electric fences, troubleshooting tables, common repairs and a yearly inspection checklist.

PLUS: printable worksheets (fence plan grid, materials calculator, cost estimator, voltage and maintenance log), a glossary, conversions and a full source list.

WHERE THE NUMBERS COME FROM
University extension publications (Virginia Tech, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Missouri, Tennessee, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Penn State and more), USDA NRCS fence standards, Canadian provincial agriculture departments and fence makers' manuals. Where good sources disagree, the guide gives the range.
