I bought this beautiful rustic teacup while I was living in Japan in the early 90s. I can't remember for sure if it's a Bizen piece but it looks very much like my other pieces I had that I know were Bizen. I collected many different types of pottery while there and *Bizen pottery (see into below) is my favorite (and quite expensive!)

I love the rustic look and the textured feel of this teacup. The potter has added four white glaze designs making the teacup even more interesting. It might also be an Echizen piece which also has a rustic look.

It measures 3 1/4" (8cm) high and 3" (7.5cm) across at the top. The potter's mark is on the bottom. I don't think I ever used this so It is in excellent condition - no chips, cracks or scratches. Use it as a teacup or for juice or sake, or just put it on display to show it off.

*Bizen ware is a type of Japanese pottery of ironlike hardness, reddish brown color, absence of glaze, and markings resulting from wood-burning kiln firing. Bizen is named after the village of Imbe in Okayama prefecture, formerly known as Bizen province. This ceramic work is Japan's oldest pottery making technique, introduced in the Heian period (794-1185). Bizen is one of the six remaining kilns of medieval Japan.

Because of the clay composition, Bizen ware is fired slowly over a long period of time. Firings take place only once or twice a year. They require the wood fire to be kept burning for 10-14 days involving long hours, hard labor, and tons of wood. The last photo from the internet shows the firing in the kiln in Imbe (formerly Bizen.)
