1956 Bavarian Cookbook PDF — German Christmas Cookie Recipes Vol. 14 in English: Zimtsterne, Spitzbuben, Pfeffernüsse | Babette's Table

This cookbook was a 1956 wedding gift to my mother. She's gone now — but her recipes aren't.

Volume 14 opens the Kleingebäck chapter — the small pastries and cookies of a 1956 Bavarian kitchen, the kind baked by the tinful for December. Eight are cookies: Pfeffernüsse left to dry overnight before baking, ladyfingers, sour cream cookies, lemon drops, jam-filled Spitzbuben, Linzer cookies, real almond macaroons, and the showpiece Zimtsterne with their pure white glaze. The last two are the book's own master glazes — a cold-stirred powdered sugar glaze and a stovetop chocolate glaze — used to finish the cookies here and the cakes in Vol. 13.

The recipes themselves are not AI-written: every one is my family's own 1956 original from my mother's copy of the book, with its original recipe number, translated and adapted with US measurements.
