Seller's description

Specifications

May include: A wooden backgammon board featuring a brown frame with inlaid red and black triangular points. The set includes white and red circular checkers, two black cylindrical dice cups, and two white six-sided dice with black pips.

This is a very beautiful Italian backgammon board from Dal Negro, the legendary Italian games maker in Treviso, Italy, dating back to the 1960s.

The walnut exterior of this game is in excellent condition, featuring the copper/brass Dal Negro logo, while the internal playing surface boasts a new looking, for Dal Negro boards pretty unusual striking red/orange and black inlay marquetry design with Canelatta walnut outer marquetry. The game's interior and exterior are remarkably well-preserved. As you can see this was before Dal Negro started to use their trade mark hidden hinges on their wooden boards.

This is a medium-size game measuring 16 1/8" X 15 3/8" (41 cm X 39 cm) open. The playing pieces measure 1 3/16” (3 cm) in diameter.

Crafted in Treviso by Dal Negro this board was originally sold through the legendary F.lli Rossi of Bologna, the historic toy shop that supplied generations of Bolognese families with their finest games and toys for over a century. A charming piece of provenance survives on the underside of the board: the shop's original oval retailer sticker, reading F.lli Rossi - Bologna - Via d'Azeglio 13-15, still intact after all these years. A set like this wasn't picked up at the corner market; it was bought as a fine gift at one of the city's most beloved institutions. Please see the photos for the sticker itself, it's part of the story as much as the board is.

"F.lli" stands for Fratelli = Rossi brothers. A real Bolognese institution: in 2017, the local newspaper Chiesa di Bologna still called them "lo storico negozio dei fratelli Rossi... che ha venduto giocattoli per un secolo" — the historic shop that sold toys and games for over a century. On Facebook pages full of Bologna nostalgia, people are still searching for photos of the shop: "My mother bought the most beautiful toys I had at the Rossi brothers'."
In short: the city's premier toy store, for generations.

This exceptional vintage backgammon set comes complete with the original Italian Dal Negro Instructions, 1 pair of dice, a doubling cube and a green felt accessories bag to store the playing pieces and two handmade leather dice shakers all original to the game. This set has the unusual Dal Negro acrylic mother of pearl dimpled checkers.

Finding a vintage Dal Negro backgammon game from the 1960s in such exceptional as new condition is a true rarity, making this a truly unique and valuable addition to any collection.

These vintage models are no longer produced by Dal Negro and will never be made again.
