Seller's description

Backyard Birds of Colorado is a chart of 16 birds you can see from a kitchen window in Colorado, laid out like a vintage field guide: each bird drawn in a matching style, with its common name and its scientific name in italics.

THE 16 BIRDS
Black-billed Magpie (Pica hudsonia), American Robin (Turdus migratorius), Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus), Black-capped Chickadee (Poecile atricapillus), Downy Woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens), White-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis), House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus), White-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys), Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis), Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia), American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis), Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura), Chipping Sparrow (Spizella passerina), Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus), Northern House Wren (Troglodytes aedon), Bullock's Oriole (Icterus bullockii).

Colorado yards change with the seasons: the Dark-eyed Junco and White-crowned Sparrow are winter birds in the lowlands that nest high in the mountains, and the Chipping Sparrow, Northern House Wren and Bullock's Oriole are spring and summer birds. Most Mourning Doves leave for the winter, though a few stay. There is no hummingbird on purpose: the Broad-tailed Hummingbird, the backyard hummingbird from the Front Range west, does not nest on the eastern plains.

Before printing, we checked every species against the Colorado Breeding Bird Atlas II, eBird records for all 64 Colorado counties and Project FeederWatch counts for Colorado. The illustrations are stylized, so for a tricky bird keep a field guide or the Merlin app handy.
