Backyard Birds of Washington Poster Print, Identification Chart with Latin Names, Wall Art

Backyard Birds of Washington is a chart of 16 birds you can see from a kitchen window in Washington, laid out like a vintage field guide: each bird drawn in a matching style, with its common name and its scientific name in italics. It includes the Washington state bird, the American Goldfinch.

THE 16 BIRDS
American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis), American Robin (Turdus migratorius), Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia), Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus), Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis), House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus), Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus), Western Tanager (Piranga ludoviciana), Black-capped Chickadee (Poecile atricapillus), Spotted Towhee (Pipilo maculatus), Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis), White-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys), Cedar Waxwing (Bombycilla cedrorum), Black-headed Grosbeak (Pheucticus melanocephalus), Downy Woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens), Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus).

Washington yards change with the seasons: the Rufous Hummingbird is here from about March to August, and the Cedar Waxwing, Black-headed Grosbeak and Western Tanager are spring and summer birds. Most American Goldfinches stay from about mid-April to mid-October, though some spend the winter east of the Cascades. The Steller's Jay is left off on purpose: it is common in the forests but scarce in the dry Columbia Basin, around Spokane and the Tri-Cities.

Before printing, we checked every species against BirdWeb's Washington range notes, eBird records for all 39 Washington counties and Project FeederWatch counts for Washington. The illustrations are stylized, so for a tricky bird keep a field guide or the Merlin app handy.
