Backyard Birds of Virginia Poster Print, Identification Chart with Latin Names, Wall Art

Backyard Birds of Virginia is a chart of 16 birds you can see from a kitchen window in Virginia, laid out like a vintage field guide: each bird drawn in a matching style, with its common name and its scientific name in italics. It includes the Virginia state bird, the Northern Cardinal.

THE 16 BIRDS
Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis), Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata), American Robin (Turdus migratorius), Carolina Chickadee (Poecile carolinensis), Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor), Carolina Wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus), Downy Woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens), House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus), Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus), American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis), Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura), Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos), Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis), White-throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis), Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis), Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris).

A few are seasonal: the White-throated Sparrow visits from about October to May and the Dark-eyed Junco from about November to April, though the junco stays all year in the mountains above about 3,000 feet. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is a summer bird, from about April to October. The Carolina Chickadee is the chickadee of nearly all of Virginia; only on the highest Allegheny ridges does the Black-capped Chickadee take its place.

Before printing, we checked every species against the Second Virginia Breeding Bird Atlas, eBird records for all 133 Virginia counties and independent cities and Project FeederWatch counts for Virginia. The illustrations are stylized, so for a tricky bird keep a field guide or the Merlin app handy.
