Backyard Birds of Illinois Poster Print, Identification Chart with Latin Names, Wall Art

Backyard Birds of Illinois is a chart of 16 birds you can see from a kitchen window in Illinois, laid out like a vintage field guide: each bird drawn in a matching style, with its common name and its scientific name in italics. It includes the Illinois state bird, the Northern Cardinal.

THE 16 BIRDS
Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis), Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata), American Robin (Turdus migratorius), Downy Woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens), Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus), Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia), White-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis), American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis), House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus), Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura), Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus), Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis), White-throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis), Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus), Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula), Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris).

A few are seasonal: the Baltimore Oriole and Ruby-throated Hummingbird are summer birds, the Dark-eyed Junco visits from about October to April, and the White-throated Sparrow from about October to May, wintering mostly in the southern half. The Red-winged Blackbird stays all year in central and southern Illinois but leaves the north in winter. There is no chickadee on purpose: the Black-capped Chickadee lives in the northern two-thirds of the state and the Carolina Chickadee in southern and east central Illinois, so neither one fits a statewide chart.

Before printing, we checked every species against eBird records for all 102 Illinois counties, Illinois DNR species pages and Project FeederWatch counts for Illinois. The illustrations are stylized, so for a tricky bird keep a field guide or the Merlin app handy.
